Why did Southern slave owners resist any challenge to the institution of Slavery?

    Southern Slave owners largely resisted any changes to the institution of slavery as the vile institution of slavery was a guaranteed (almost) free source of labor and that enabled them to have a larger profit margin on their cotton.
