It's the sinking of the British passenger ship Lusitania, sunk in the Atlantic by a torpedo fired by a German U-boat on May 7, 1915. The number of mortal victims is 1.198, 128 of them Americans. It was one of the main factors that contributed to turn American public opinion - and in other nations - against Germany.
