    Before the Great War, as World War I was also named, The US declared itself to be an neutral country. This meant that they didn't want to join the war because they knew what would happen had they join it immediately - a long and grueling conflict with a devastating effect on the economy would ensue and happen.

    They didn't want to participate at all, but were eventually made to join.
