What was America's concern in the space race with reference to arms race?

American was concerned because Russia could of unlocked the secrets to launch missiles form there own country changing the arms race and space race indefinitely but American were also worried about the fact that a nuclear war could happen at any time after the creation of the hydrogen bomb
