Why did small kingdoms and city-states in Western Asia emerge?

    A lot of it was due to the lucrative gold-salt trade there. Although it was near the desert,

    the kingdoms of Ghana, Mali, and Songhai could thrive off of the salt they traded for

    and use it for food preservatives and to build houses. Furthermore, using gold they

    could trade for other things necessary for well-being.
