    island hopping

    Explanation:

Leapfrogging better known as island hopping was the strategy that the US used and it played a vital role in the regaining of the Philippines.

The strategy was possible because of the superiority of the US submarines and airforce against the Japans logistics network. By weakening the Japanese ability to resupply garrisons. Because of that, the US could simply pass on some islands because they were now incapable of fighting the war and thus posed no threat behind US lines.
