The majority of the rules and laws came from the country that owned the colony. As a result, the American legal system began with the laws of Great Britain, with heavy Spanish influence in the Southwest and French influence in Louisiana. The leaders of the colonies, usually a committee, established additional rules for keeping their community running. In some cases, these rules were considered unfair or unreasonable, particularly those associated with religious issues, and people left these colonies to establish their own. Roger Williams founded Rhode Island due to this.
