    After the Civil War ended with the victory of The Union. The State of South Carolina, which belonged to the Confederacy, quickly drafted a state constitution trying to restrain the African American people's newly gained rights and freedom. These legal enactments allowed the state to create separate services for White and African American citizens, including the creation of schools exclusive for African American children which were run by African Americans.

In the Reconstruction period all public sites were separated to prevent the white man from becoming contaminated with the black man. The progress of black people was limited with the creation of Black Codes. Many schools were attacked to intimidate free blacks. They kept the freed slaves still in servitude, with limited education.
