Islam in East Africa: They were in Africa and that is the first region in which Islam carried merchants rather than armies. Then it spreads down trade routes of the east coast. The coastal towns of the Red Sea (the heart of Islam) play a huge part. Archaeologically, there is evidence of a little, wooden mosque (for about ten worshippers) as far south as Kenya. Now, by the 11th century Islam makes its greatest advancements in Africa. Several settlements down the east coast have stone mosques. Islam in South Africa: From 8th century Islam spreads gradually south by the use of the Sahara trade routes. By 10th century many of the merchants at the southern end of the trade routes are Muslims. In the 11th century the rulers begin to convert.
