The CIA wanted to destabilize the Chilean government because in 1970, Salvador Allende was elected president. Allende was the first Marxist to become president of a Latin American country. Since the beginning of his political career, Allende always had a close relationship with the Chilean Communist Party. He kept close contact with Cuba and this scared the U. S. government. The Nixon administration continued to support Allende's opponents in the Chilean Congress and the CIA and the US State Department officials were ordered to put pressure on the Allende government.
