Why did the idea of a "chief executive" scare many citizens during the ratification period?

The idea of a "chief executive" scared many citizens during the ratification period as they saw that the powers to be granted to the President might enable the chief executive to function as a king or even a tyrant. These citizens were known as the "Anti-Federalists".
