In 1893, over 12 million people traveled to Chicago for the World's Columbian Exposition. At that time, the city of Chicago was popularly known as the "white city" for its flashing white buildings. However, the visitors also witnessed the other side of Chicago which involved pollution, crime, and poverty. These problems made Chicago known as a ‘’gray city". Both versions of the city are a result of urbanization and industrialization.
