I think he knew immediately that the war would be over very quickly. Intelligence at the time showed he had very little resources to defend himself ... his own brother in law, who was in his inner circle told the CIA over and over he had nothing. This isn't a rant either, I was there. Sorry America, we were bamboozled.

When the plan of invasion and war came in 2002-2003 from the U. S to Iraq, where Saddam Hussein was ruling, in reaction to the attacks of 9/11, and which was suspected had been supported by Hussein by him harboring members of Al-Qaeda, at first the world shook because it seemed that Hussein was going to plant a front against the U. S. Especially because although there was world support towards the U. S fighting against terrorism, not all were convinced invading Iraq was the answer. There was also the fear of other Muslim countries responding aggressively against an invasion from the U. S.

But in the end, it is evident that despite trying to confront the U. S, and actually putting up a small fight against the move, Hussein finally realized that it was not just the U. S they would be fighting against, but the western powers as a front, and realized that the war was going to go against him. In the end he died executed by the forces of the United States.
