During 1897-1898, there was a rebellion in Cuba to get freedom from Spanish rule. America tried to support the rebels and went forward with negotiations with the Spanish. It resulted in a war, the Spanish American War. After the 1898 Spanish American War, US acquired the following places:

The Republic of Hawaii, Philippines, Puerto Rico and Guam

During the war, the US had temporary possession of Cuba.
