    the american birthrate decreased throughout the twentieth century with the exception of the period from 1945 to 1960. in those two decades due to the economic abundance of the postwar period., the national birthrate increased immensely reaching its peak in 1975 with 4.3 million births. the children born during this era are refereed to as the baby boom generation.
