What were some of the motives behind germany's sending of the document to mexico?

    The Zimmerman telegram was a sign that Germany was trying to persuade the Mexican government into joining World War I on the Central Powers side and fighting the United States, thus taking pressure and redirecting American troops landing in Europe to south of the United States border. By doing this hypothetically it was possible that Germany could have won the war, but in the end it never worked out
