    Partition Plan for Palestine

Resolution adopted at the Second Session of the UN General Assembly on 29 November 1947 in order to divide the territory of Mandate Palestine into two states, Jewish and Arab. The resolution has the official name of the Plan of the Economic Union. The resolution was adopted prior to the termination of the British mandate in Palestine and recommended dividing the territory into two states - one Jewish and one Arab, taking account of creation in the area of the cities of Jerusalem and Bethlehem, a special area under international protection, administered by the United Nations. The plan sought to resolve the conflicting interests of both ethnic groups and satisfy the claims of the two competing movements: Zionism, Jewish and Arab pan-Arabism. The resolution contained a detailed description of the recommended boundaries for each proposed State.
