The ratification of the 19th Amendment in 1920 granted women the right to vote, contributing significantly to the growth of the role of women in society. Additionally, during WWI women had gained significant roles in the workplace, and this continued in the 1920's. Newly-liberated women often engaged in behaviors that had them collectively labeled as "flappers". Thus the above descriptions refer collectively to American Women.
