One of the most lethal and terrible technological innovations of WWI was the development and use of poisonous gas in the trenches of the Western Front (for the first time) by the German army. It surprised the Allied forces, which soon developed their own. Other innovations worthy mentioning are the tank, the use of aircraft for military missions in combat and modern gun machines that decimated whole armies.
