What role did nationalism play in changing political ideologies in France?

Before the French Revolution took place, France was mainly divided into many different regions--each with specific cultural identities. The rumblings of Revolution brought people from all over France together and caused them to be united for a common cause (in this case to rid themselves of the monarch), which lies at the heart of nationalism.
