Soon after the USS Maine sank in Havana Harbor, muckracking yellow journalists egged on by US politicians blamed the sinking on the Spanish, inciting the Spanish-American War.
History has cleared the Spanish and the ship actually sank because of an internal explosion and not from hitting a mine in the harbor.
