The Edict of Milan was important due to its much significance to both the empire and to the future of all of Europe. It was the outcome of a political agreement concluded in Milan between Constantine and Licinius who were the then the Roman Emperors in 313 AD. The Edict of Milan made Christianity a legal religion within the Roman Empire where for much of Roman history, Christians had been persecuted.

The Milan Edict was signed by Emperor Constantine and Licinius in February 313. This edict declared religious tolerance, and therefore Christianity was equated with other religions in the way of treatment, within Roman Empire. What is particularly important, is that this act has stopped the persecution of Christians, which was especially made during the time of Emperor Diocletian, as well as their predecessors.
