From the Five Tribes, known as well as Five Civilized Tribes, which was the term used in the colonial and early federal period in the history of the United States to refers to five tribes that Anglo-European settlers considered to be "civilized" (the Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek or Muscogee, and Seminole), the last one had a form of government led by a town's single chief.

    The Seminole tribe were organized around itálwa, equivalent to towns in English, which constituted the basis of their social, political and ritual systems. Each itálwa had civil, military and religious leaders and even though they were self-governing they cooperated for mutual defense.
