    It has to do with the route he took. Wanting a faster route to reach India for the Spanish Crown, he wanted to make a chart of the western route to China, India, and fabled gold / spice lands in Asia. Instead possibly by wind patterns Columbus ended up in the Brahamas to which made him think Cuba was actually China.
