Why was most of the world easier to conquer during the 1800s

The 19th century was considered the time of conquest for many of the worlds greatest empires, especially the British. Overcoming local populations was relatively easy because these local populations did not have the guns, germs, and steel the more developed nations had. This led to swift and decisive victories by the colonizers.
