A probation or parole officer is a federal agent who supervises and monitors a convicted person during the period of his probation.

Four major functions of parole or probation officers are as follows:

To monitor the activities of the convicted person and making sure he does not do anything illegal during his probation period. To surveil and follow the person on probation in required hours. To search, seize, and arrest the convicted if he finds anything wrong. To make the record and data about the convicted and pass it to his officers.

The types of technological tools that are used by probation or parole officers are GPS units and trackers.
