First, you would convert 8/3 to 2 2/3. Then, you would convert 2/3 and 1/4 to 12ths and 2/3 = 8/12 and 1/4=3/12. Finally, you add them all. 8/12+3/12=11/12
2+2=4 4+11/12 = 4 11/12
