There are 17 more girls than boys. There are 431 students in all. How many boys are there

    Let g = number of girls, and b = number of boys

    g = 17 + b

    431 = g + b

    so, after substitution

    431 = (17+b) + b

    431 = 17 + 2b

    Solve for b, and you will get your answer.
