    Volume of a Cylinder:

    V = pi * r^2 * h

    Plug in what we know:

    V = 3.14 * 0.5^2 * 5

    V = 3.925

    Now we divide 3.925 / 0.48 to find out how many batches of mortar we can make with one cylinder of sand.

    3.925 / 0.48 = 8

    So he can make 8 batches of mortar.
