    For this case, the first thing we must do is define variables:

    x: walking shoes

    y: running shoes

    We now write the system of equations:

    There are 135 pairs of shoes in this display:

    x + y = 135

    There are 1.5 times as many pairs of walking shoes as there are running shoes on display:

    x = 1.5y

    Solving the system:

    x = 81

    y = 54 Answer:

    x + y = 135

    x = 1.5y

    x = 81

    y = 54
