    let x be the number of students

    that means x number of students walk

    5x take the bus (5 times the number of students)

    24 is the total number of students so:

    x + 5x = 24 (the number of walkers + the number of bus riders equal 24)

    6x = 24 then divide both sides by 6 so x is left alone.

    x=4, so 5x (5 times x equals 20) Walkers = 5 Riders = 20 Total=24
