Add the like terms in the RHS
16 - 2r = 3r + 1
Add 2r to both the sides
16 - 2r + 2r = 3r + 1 + 2r
16 = 5r + 1
Subtract 1 from both sides
16 - 1 = 5r + 1 - 1
15 = 5r
Divide both sides by 5
15/5 = 5r/5
3 = r
r = 3
