What is the purpose of a coordinate plane?

How does the Z axis relate to the x and y axis.

    A coordinate plane allows for the graphical representation of data. It makes making predictions and analysis easier. On the Cartesian coordinate plane, the Z-axis describes area in a 3d space; where the abscissa (x) axis and the ordinate (y) axis describe space in a 2d environment.
