    Let the u known number = x

Five times the number added to negative eight would be written as:

    5x + (-8) which simplifies tips 5x - 8

That gets subtracted from triple the sum of eight times the number and 3. Sum is addition so that part of the equation would be 3 (8x+3)

    Final equation is : 3 (8x+3) - 5x - 8

This can then be simplified to:

    3 (8x+3) = 24x + 9

    To get: 24x + 9 - 5x-8

Combine like terms to get: 19x+1
