The number of calories in a piece of pie is 20 less that 3 times the number of calories in a scoop of ice cream. The pie and the ice cream together have 500 calories. How many calories are in each?

    Let c=ice cream and p=pie

    3c-20=p

    p+c=500

    Substitute for p.

    p=130 and c=370
