A submarine descends from sea level to the entrance of an underwater cave. The elevation of the entrance is - 120 feet. The rate of change in the submarine's elevation is no greater than - 12 feet per second. Can the submarine reach the entrance to the cave in less than 10 seconds? Write an inequality. Explain.

    t > or = 120/12

    As the max rate of descent is 12 ft/s the quickest time possible would be

    the distance / greatest speed

    = 120 / 12

    =10 secs

    If the rate of descent was slower, the time of descent would increase.

    eg if rate = 10 ft/s

    time = 120 / 10 = 12 secs
