If you would like to know which expression has the same value as - 5 - (-9), you can find it using the following step:

If you have two minus signs next to each other, you can substitute them with one plus sign:

    - 5 - (-9) = - 5 + 9 = 4

    The correct result would be - 5 + 9.

Well, - 5 - (-9) is the same exact thing as adding the negative. a negative and a negative equal a positive. you can turn the two - signs (the subtraction and the one in the parantheses) to a plus, and so then it would be - 5 + 9. - 5 + 9 = - 14. (How did I get the negative 14?) (leave out the negative before the 5, add 5 + 9 which equals 14. a positive plus a negative is a negative so the answer would be - 14. so another expression to wrote - 5 - (-9) is - 5+9
