A group of 3 friends spends a total of $17.25 for brunch at a restaurant before tax and tip. Everyone orders the same thing: scrambled eggs, toast, and orange juice. An order of toast costs $1, and an order of orange juice costs $1.75.

    I'm assuming the question is how much does the scrambled eggs cost, as that is the only missing information.

    Each of the three friends ordering an order of toast adds up to - - $3

    Each of the three friends ordering an orange juice adds up to - - $5.25

    If we subtract that total, $8.25 from the total amount spent before tax and tip then we get $9 remaining.

    Each of the three friends ordered scrambled eggs, and if three orders of scrambled eggs cost $9 then $9/3 = an order of scrambled eggs costing $3.
