A 37 -inch piece of steel is cut into three pieces so that the second piece is twice as long as the first piece, and the third piece is two inches more than four times the length of the first piece. find the lengths of the pieces.

    1st piece = x

    2nd piece = 2x

    3rd piece = 4x+2

    x + 2x + 4x + 2 = 37

    7x+2 = 37

    7x = 35

    x = 35/7 = 5

    1st piece = 5 inches

    2nd piece = 10 inches

    3rd piece = 22 inches
