By mistake, Sally's boss gave her a 12% pay cut. What percentage raise must Sally be given to correct the situation and restore her pay to its original amount?

    Her pay must be raised 113.6% to bring it back up to the original amount.

    Taking 12% off of her pay results in her receiving 88% of her pay, as 100%-12% = 88%.

    Let x b the percentage we raise her pay to in order to fix the situation. This gives us the equation

    0.88x = 1.00

    (88% of her pay multiplied by the new percentage would raise it to 100%)

    To solve this, divide both sides by 0.88:

    0.88x/0.88 = 1.00/0.88

    x = 113.6
