    Step-by-step explanation:

    One number is 40 less than another number.

    Let the first number be x

    And the next number be y

    x = y-40

    x is the lesser number because y = x+40

    Two-thirds of the lesser number is equal to one-fourth of the greater number.

    2/3x = 1/4y

    Inserting y = x+40

    2/3x = 1/4y = 1/4 (x+40)

    2/3x = 1/4x + 1/4 (40)

    2/3x - 1/4x = 10

    8x-3x/12=10

    cross multiply

    11x = 12 x 10

    11x = 120

    x = 120/11 = 10.9090 = 10.91

    y = x+40 = 10.91+40 = 50.91
