First, find out how much of each coin the grandpa has ...

    24:2 = 12 dimes

    24:6 = 4 quarters

    24-16 = 8 remaining coins

    8:2 = 4 pennies and 4 nickels

Then, find out what each group of coins is worth ...

    12 times 10 = $1.20 worth of dimes

    4 times 25 = $1.00 of quarters

    4 times 1 = 4 cents of pennies

    4 times 5 = 20 cents worth of nickels

Then, add all the values that you found out in the last step together ...

    $1.20

    1.00

    0.04

    +0.20

$2.44 is the total value that Sam needs to discover.
