    I bought a total of 10 packs. 5 packs of sunflower seeds and 5 packs of other seeds.

    one pack sunflower seeds = $4.50

    one pack other seeds = $3.50

    number of packs bought = x/2 * x is equally divided between the two kinds of seeds.

    4.5 (x/2) + 3.5 (x/2) = 40

    4.5x/2 + 3.5x/2 = 40

    (4.5x + 3.5x) / 2 = 40

    8x/2 = 40

    (8x/2) * 2 = 40 * 2

    8x = 80

    8x/8 = 80/8

    x = 10

    to check:

    4.50 (x/2) + 3.50 (x/2) = 40

    4.50 (10/2) + 3.50 (10/2) = 40

    4.50 (5) + 3.50 (5) = 40

    22.50 + 17.50 = 40

    40 = 40
