According to Hooke's, the force needed to stretch a spring is directly proportional to the amount the spring is stretched. If fifty pounds of force stretches five inches, how much will the spring be stretched by a force of 130 pounds?

    We need to write a proportion:

    Length 1 / Force 1=Length 2 / Force 2

    5 in. / 50 lb = x in/130 lb

    x=5*130/50 = 13 in.
