    Book sold = 1 000 000

    1000000 * 40% = 400 000

The 55 year olds bought 40% of the book.

    40% of 1 000 000.

    = (40 / 100) * 1 000 000

    = 0.4 * 1 000 000

    = 400 000

They bought four hundred thousand books.

    I hope this explains it.
