3/16 is less than (<) 1/2. Think of it this way, you have cake and you slice it into 16 pieces, and you eat three. Then you take another cake and cut it directly in half, and eat one half. In which would you eat more cake? Yep, 1/2.

3/16 would be less than 1/2 for the reason being that to be equivalent to 1/2 it would need to be 8/16 and to be greater it would be 9/16 or more.
