Mrs. Williams needed to make 4 1/2 of fruit salad for a class party.

She used 1 1/8 pounds of grapes, 3/4 of a pound of cherries and 1 3/4 pounds of melon. The rest

of the salad was strawberries,

    add on proportions

    1 1/8 + 3/4 + 1 3/4 + x = 4 1/2

    (9+6+14) / 8 + x = 9/2

    29/8 + x = 9/2

    x = 9/2 - 29/8

    x = (36-29) / 8
