1.97 to the nearest tenth is 2 because in 1.97 the tenth is 9 and the number next to 9 is 7, since 7 is larger than 5, 9 has to be 10 but since 10 is a 2 digit number we have to add the 1 to the ones place which is 1 to make it into 2.
