    to start both of the fractions need the same denominator so you can add or subtract them. so you have to convert the thirds to ninths to do this you multiply both the numerator and denominator by three which would give you 3/9. then you subtract 3/9 from 8/9. When doing this you only subtract the top numbers not the bottom numbers.

    so 8/9-3/9 = 5/9 since you just subtract the top number and keep the bottom number.
