We can think about percentages in two ways:
1. We want to multiply 870 by 35% and then add it to 870
2. We can skip a step and just multiply 870 by 135%
1.35 * 870 = 1174.5
$1,174.5 is 35% more than $870

870 (1.35) = 1174.5, You would do this because 35% more of something requires 100% of something plus the 35% so 1.35 is 135%
